Best Stress Relieving Activity: Skydiving!

Sunday, May 31, 2020

Not since September 11, 2001, has the world collectively endured so much stress. Between COVID-19, quarantining, face mask debates, food and toilet paper shortages, financial insecurity, riots, racism, high unemployment, and vitriolic partisan politics, 2020 has proven to be one ginormous dumpster fire! To say it’s been stressful would be an understatement!

If you’re emerging from quarantine and ready to blow off some steam, you may want to consider skydiving and not because it’s a major thrill, but because it’s one of the greatest stress relievers out there. Many who have skydived describe the experience to be therapeutic and we would have to agree. Skydiving is so much more than an adventure – it’s a forced recalibration of your system that positively affects you mentally, physically, and even spiritually! Many mental health therapists have claimed skydiving to be one of the best stress-reducing activities for those feeling on the edge! Others have claimed skydiving cured their depression

The Perfect Escape from All Your Stress

It’s ironic, but the very thought of skydiving can bring about stress, but as many have discovered, the rewards far outweigh the risks. Skydiving is the perfect escape from stress and even trauma.

When crouched in the door of an airplane, one’s focus narrows as the heart races, and the fight or flight chemistry within the brain twitches wildly. As you step out into the unknown, fear turns to exhilaration as you’re comfortably supported by an invisible force that allows for some kind of magical stability. You’re not falling… you’re flying and in this flight, you are completely free. The brain that usually carries so much weight is suddenly weightless. Every burden and strain is released into the clean air and for the first time in ages, you are living completely in the moment. No worries of the past nor the future. Only now. You are completely present and your spirit free.

Skydiving isn’t addictive because of the rush – that’s superficial marketing. Below the surface is an experience that puts a spotlight on darkness wanting to be set free.

Skydiving is a reprieve from burden making it a true gift.

The Science Behind the Peace

The peace felt by so many in skydiving is the result of the brain’s chemical reaction to skydiving – namely the surge of endorphins washing over the brain. Endorphins interact with opiate receptors in the brain to reduce pain which is what prescription drugs like codeine and morphine are designed to do! Unlike opiates, the activation of the opiate receptors by the natural release of endorphins is not addictive. If psychologies could prescribe skydiving, they would!  Wait, there’s more! The natural secretion of endorphins leads to feelings of euphoria, an enhancement of the immune response, and even sex hormones!

In other words, skydiving is the most natural and pure high your brain will receive and it leaves you feeling amazing.

Listen to how professional skydivers describe skydiving. Despite skydiving thousands of times those feelings never wear off.

Tandem Skydiver in freefall at Skydive Tecumseh

Skydiving for the first time at Skydive Tecumseh was by far one of the greatest experiences of my life. No matter how high maintenance I was before the jump when I was scared, every single jumper employee did everything they could to make my experience unforgettable. I have already recommended here for many of my friends wanting to go with me for their first time on my next round!
